Hello,
Yesterday, we had our second public Quarkus community call.
Here is a short summary. You can find the complete minutes (including the recording) on https://docs.google.com/document/d/1TgFZsuOQo9qZ4CnQII5LHhQVgMC6YsVMs1UJIAJooyM/edit?usp=sharing.
Recap:
The second Quarkus Community Call focused heavily on insights from the GraalVM 2025 Summit, with Georgios confirming that the GraalVM ecosystem is vibrant and continuing to grow. Despite its move under the Oracle Database group, GraalVM will continue to invest significantly in Native Image, shifting to a release model aligned with OpenJDK LTS versions rather than following every six-month JDK release. A significant highlight was Project Crema, an ambitious effort to bring dynamic Java capabilities into the AOT Native Image world. Sanne outlined how Quarkus could eventually benefit from this through a layered image architecture, reducing build time and memory while enabling optional runtime dynamism.
The call also covered progress on Java 25 support. Sanne presented an ongoing “master plan” split across multiple PRs, and work continues on automatically configuring the necessary --add-opens and --add-exports to improve developer experience. The team is also waiting for the official UBI 10.1 images with JDK 25 to update Quarkus container bases.
Gizmo 2 migration efforts were also discussed, with contributors actively improving build-time performance and addressing regressions observed in corner cases. Finally, Eric provided an update on publishing public benchmark results. While the pipeline is in place, Podman/container startup issues in the performance lab are currently blocking full runs, with only build-time metrics published so far.
