The version on github is incorrect

this hyphen creates some problems

Hi @LinXP, we actually went through this when setting up our versioning, so I get where you're coming from.

The reason we ended up with the hyphen format is that we have two desktop apps (Cloud and SelfHost) that are mostly identical but sometimes need different patch versions. Like we might release v25.8.1-0 for both, but then only need to patch the Cloud version to v25.8.1-1 while SelfHost stays at v25.8.1-0.

When we were figuring this out, we looked at what you suggested as well; using v25.8.1.0 format, but we hit some problems, like it breaking strict SemVer (which only defines MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH), also some tools that validate SemVer format would get confused, and it caused issues with dependency resolution systems expecting 3-part versions.

We also thought of the "proper" SemVer approach with build metadata like v25.8.1+0, but that got very complicated. Some package managers would strips everything after the + when publishing, and the plus sign would sometimes get mangled in URLs. Lots of package managers either ignore it completely or handle it differently.

The hyphen approach isn't perfect but it turned out to be the most stable/compatible across the toolchain. That said, we're definitely open to suggestions if there's something better. Always happy to learn from what others are doing.
